JADCO REVEALS MASCOT

The Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission’s (JADCO) Mascot, Leo – The Dope Patrol Officer, was revealed to participants at the first in the 2015 series of Junior Athletes Anti-Doping Education Workshops held at the Jamaica Conference Centre (JCC) on Wednesday, October 7, 2015.

Adjaynae Billings, a fourth form student at Ardenne High School, walked away with $25,000 and a trophy for designing the winning mascot. Antonio Mundell and Rachel Brown, also of Ardenne High School, were awarded $15,000 and $10,000 respectively for placing second and
third in the JADCO Mascot competition. The competition was held from October 1, 2014 to April 10, 2015 and was open to students from secondary schools across the island.

Speaking at the workshop, Carey Brown, Executive Director at JADCO, congratulated Adjaynae on the creativity he exhibited in designing the mascot which will play an essential role in the Commission’s outreach activities. “Leo is a welcome addition to the JADCO family. He is the epitome of ethical behaviour and will help our athletes to make informed decisions. I am sure they will be able to build a rapport with him.”

Adjaynae was grateful that his mascot was selected as the winner of the competition. “I would like to give thanks to God for winning this competition. I entered the competition because I wanted to do something to make Jamaica better and JADCO provided the perfect opportunity to show my talent. I am very elated.”

Over one hundred student athletes and support personnel from schools located in Kingston and St. Andrew, St. Thomas and St. Catherine participated in the workshop. They were educated on the role and responsibilities of JADCO and the doping control process. Dr. Paula Dawson, Medical Practitioner, also delivered a presentation on the negative effects of prohibited substances and methods.

At the workshop, the Commission introduced a new component focused on values-based education. This was developed to allow participants to learn about the values of sport and the importance of being guided by moral principles during their sporting careers.

The Commission will host three additional workshops during the month of October at the Golf View Hotel in Manchester on Wednesday, October 14, The Wexford Hotel in St. James on Wednesday, October 21 and at The Cardiff Hotel and Spa in St. Ann on Wednesday, October 28.
