JUNIOR ATHLETES FROM MANCHESTER, ST. ELIZABETH AND WESTMORELAND BENEFIT FROM JUNIOR ATHLETES ANTI-DOPING EDUCATION WORKSHOP

Several junior athletes, physical education teachers and athlete support personnel turned out to support the third in a series of Junior Athletes Anti-Doping Education Workshops, organised by the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) in collaboration with the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA). The workshop was held at Church Teachers’ College in Manchester on Wednesday, February 26 and targeted individuals from the regions of Manchester, St. Elizabeth and Westmoreland.

Speaking at the event, Carey Brown, Executive Director of JADCO, reminded the coaches and athlete support personnel of the importance of their role. “Coaches, teachers, I don’t really have to add that your support is integral to the success of these athletes. You play such a crucial role in providing them with guidance. If you get it wrong, it means they will get it wrong. It is therefore important for you to keep yourselves up to date with the latest information, so that you can pass on the right advice to those students who you influence.”

Also speaking at the event, Vilma Charlton, 4th Vice President of JAAA said “These seminars are very important to us, especially as Jamaicans continue to display a wealth of talent on a yearly basis. It is therefore our duty as the governing body along with JADCO, to educate you about banned substances.” She also offered condolences to the family of Cavahn Mckenzie and the St. Jago High School family on the passing of Cavahn, who died of a heart attack after finishing the cross country race in Tobago last weekend.

The workshop featured talks from Nadia Vassell, Director, Technical Services, JADCO, Marcia Swyer-Forbes, Chairperson for the Education Committee, JAAA and Dr. Alfred Dawes, Medical Practitioner. As a result of the workshop, participants were able to increase their knowledge of the role of JADCO, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the Jamaica Anti-Doping Programme. They were also informed of the Doping Control
Process, banned substances and the role of support staff.

Two workshops have already been successfully staged at the Jamaica Conference Centre (JCC) and the G.C. Foster College Of Physical Education and Sport and two remaining workshops are scheduled to be held at:

  • The Wexford HotelSt. JamesWednesday, March 12, 2014

JADCO was formally established with the passage of the Anti-Doping in Sport Act, 2008 as the national anti-doping organisation. JADCO’s mandate is to foster a doping-free environment in Jamaica that promotes the ethics and spirit of sport and deters the use of banned doping practices in sport through education, testing, advocacy and programme coordination.
